Before my formal schooling years, I often began my day with Romper Room. It was a half-hour of black-and-white TV, watching a half-dozen kids have fun and do cool things like ride stick horses around in a circle, and cut and paste.
Each day at the show’s end, The Lady would look through a special mirror that enabled her to “view” the viewers (don’t worry—it was totally innocent). Then she would name a few kids that she saw-- “I see Bobby, and Susie, and Mark, and Mary….” and I would be crushed, because my name was never mentioned (mind you, there were probably a total of two Marilyns watching any given show). But at the very end, my 5 yr. old heart was suddenly euphoric with her pronouncement of “…and I see you, too, and I’ll see you tomorrow on Romper Room.” This happened whenever I watched the show. I don’t remember when (or, if ever) I clued in that the shtick was the same on every show, and that she couldn’t care less if my little face was plastered to the screen, waiting.
Genesis “…Thou God seest me:”
Thank you, God, for always seeing me.
