At God’s Word, they disembark. Imagine the emotions that must have emerged as the group left the ark—relief that the waiting was over, joy at the simple act of warming themselves in the sun and touching dry earth, apprehension at the huge task of surviving in this unprepared environment, fear of everything familiar being swept away, sadness at remembering family and friends forever lost. Yet, the need to thank God overrode even the need to build shelter. Using animals from his meager supply, Noah sacrificed to Jehovah, Deliverer and Keeper of promises. The God of grace, pleased with this worshipful incense, responded to Noah’s faith and trust with another promise. This first altar, Noah’s simple pile of rocks, holds our hope--our deliverance by God from sin, and Christ’s offering of Himself as a sacrifice sweet-smelling savor to His Father for us.
